A] What Is a Composite (Tooth-Coloured) Filling?

Composite filling, also known as tooth-coloured filling, is a dental restoration method, utilises resin-based composite material and powdered glass or ceramic fillers to fill in the decayed portion of the tooth. The materials utilised in this process are collectively known as composites. These composites are used in various dental caries, such as cavities, chipped teeth, and other related dental issues, providing a natural-looking and durable tooth after repair. It is an affordable tooth-coloured filling and ideal for small to moderate cavities.

B] Benefits of Composite Fillings

1. Aesthetic Appeal

Composite filling blends with your natural-tooth shade, making it impossible to guess whether it is a composite filling or an existing natural tooth. Composites are designed to mimic the existing tooth colour, making them aesthetically pleasing and functional like existing ones.

2. Bonds Directly To The Tooth Structure

Composite filling directly bonds to the tooth structure through a combination of physical and chemical mechanisms, offering natural-like function and aesthetics. The direct bonding also helps in forming the protective shell, which further aids in reinforcing the remaining tooth structure.

3. Preserves A More Natural Tooth

Composite fillings require less tooth removal compared to traditional dental restoration methods, such as metal fillings, keeping your tooth structure close to its natural state. It helps save your real tooth and keeps it looking and feeling natural.

C] Composite Tooth Filling Procedure: What to Expect

A composite tooth filling is a common and straightforward procedure performed to fix cavities, cracks, chips, diastemas, and fractures. Below are the procedure details:

  • Assessment and Preparation: The procedure starts with assessment and preparation, where a dentist examines the tooth and may take X-ray shots to assess the extent of damage.
  • Local Anesthesia Administration: Further, affected areas are numbed with local anesthesia to ensure a pain-free and comfortable cosmetic tooth filling.
  • Decay Removal and Tooth Preparation: In this step, the dentist carefully removes decayed or damaged teeth with a specialised tool. Further, the affected tooth is prepared for the composite filling.
  • Layering the Composites: After preparing the tooth, the bonding agent is applied to the tooth’s surface, making sure it adheres firmly to the tooth structure. Now, tooth-coloured composite is layered onto the prepared area. Then, a specialised light is used to harden the resin.
  • Shaping and Polishing: Lastly, the dentist shapes and polishes fillings to match the natural contour of the tooth. This artistic process ensures that the repaired tooth blends with the surrounding teeth.
  • Final Inspection and Aftercare: After completion of the composite filling procedure, the dentist checks that it has been done as expected. If everything goes well, the doctor suggests some aftercare practices to ensure rapid healing and durability.

D] Composite Filling Side Effects

The composite filling procedure is typically safe and secure, making tooth-coloured filling the safest option for cavities. However, minor side effects of composite filling have been noticed, such as tooth sensitivity after the composite filling and minor gum soreness. These side effects go away on their own. Besides, some individuals may experience allergies, which is rare. If you get any side effects besides minor ones, consult your doctor immediately and inform them about your condition.

E] Why Choose Tooth-Coloured Fillings?

Tooth-coloured fillings are the popular choice for small and moderate dental damage. It offers a more natural-looking and less invasive alternative to traditional amalgam fillings. It is a mercury-free process, which is also a reason for its popularity, as it eliminates the potential health risks. Besides, various other benefits, such as blends with teeth, minimal tooth removal, withstand chewing force, reduced sensitivity, and long-lasting, attract patients to choose composite filling against traditional dental restoration methods, like metal filling. It offers a blend of aesthetics, durability, and safety.
