Understanding Gum Disease: Gingivitis And Periodontitis

Gum disease is an oral health condition that causes troubles such as mild gum tenderness or occasional gum bleeding while brushing. Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease, while periodontitis is an advanced form of gum disease. Common signs of gingivitis include redness, swelling and bleeding while brushing. With periodontitis, signs such as bad breath, tooth sensitivity, and loose teeth become apparent. Early intervention becomes crucial as part of gum disease prevention

At Oris Dental, we provide personalised treatment options based on the severity of your symptoms. With modern diagnostic techniques, stop the progression of gum disease and prevent any risk of infection in the first place.

Stages Of Gum Disease

In the early stage of a gum disease, only subtle signs might be noticed. It’s when the disease advances that it can cause severe issues such as tooth mobility or tooth loss. Let’s understand each stage to know the treatment required:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease. It’s when the plaque builds up along your gum line. Deep cleaning is always advisable for this gum disease.

Early Peridontitis

When left untreated, gingivitis progresses towards periodontitis. Here, infection affects both your gums and teeth. An early gum infection treatment is usually suggested in this case.

Moderate Periodontitis

Moderate periodontitis is the next stage of early periodontitis. Gum pockets deepen, and symptoms such as bad breath become noticeable. Professional gum therapy should be sought in this case.

Advanced Periodontitis

Advanced periodontitis is the final stage of periodontitis. Even basic tasks such as chewing become difficult. Specialised intervention is required to preserve the remaining teeth.

Causes Of Gum Disease

Causes Of Gum Disease

Gum disease happens gradually. Several factors can contribute towards the development and progression of gum disease. Some common causes often involve:

  • Plague And Tartar :Plague is a slick film of bacteria that develops on your teeth. If not removed, this turns into tartar. This results in the accumulation of bacteria and even infection in certain cases.
  • Poor Oral Hygiene:Inconsistent brushing, skipping flossing, and other improper cleaning techniques can increase the risk of an infection.
  • Smoking And Tobacco:Smoking and tobacco weaken a healthy immune system. This makes it hard for the body to fight infection and even slows the healing process.
  • Hormonal Changes:Hormonal changes during phases like pregnancy, puberty, menstruation and menopause can make gums more sensitive. In certain cases, they may even appear red and inflamed.
  • Medical Conditions:Medical conditions such as diabetes and inflammation can increase the chances of gum disease.
  • Genetics And Family History:Some individuals are more likely to develop gum disease. A family history of periodontal disease also increases the likelihood of developing similar gum diseases.

Treatment Options For Gum Disease

Gum disease is a medical condition that affects not only your gums but also the supporting structures of your teeth.

  • Professional Cleaning:Professional cleaning is the recommended treatment option in case of a gum infection. It targets both plaque and tartar, which are difficult to remove through regular brushing.
  • Professional Deep Cleaning :Deep cleaning is a highly effective treatment to target the gum infection. It not only stops the inflammation and bleeding but also ensures stronger gums over time.
  • Periodontal Therapy :For moderate levels of infection, a gum disease therapy might be a more suitable option. This includes antibiotic therapy, minor surgical procedures, and even laser therapy.
