Oral Sedation Dentistry A Modern Approach to Stress Free Dental Care

Oral Sedation Dentistry: A Modern Approach to Stress-Free Dental Care

Oral sedation is a type of sedation dentistry where the patient takes a sedation pill. The purpose of this procedure is to reduce anxiety and increase feelings of relaxation. Unlike general anaesthesia, oral sedation works at a neurochemical level.

At Oris Dental, our focus is to provide you with treatment in a calm, stress-free environment. Choose us if you’re looking for highly trained dentists specialising in advanced oral sedation techniques.

Who Is An Ideal Candidate For Oral Sedation?

Not every patient is suitable for oral sedation. A detailed evaluation involving your medical history, procedure type, and comfort needs to be considered. Here are some ideal candidates for oral sedation

Patients with anxiety

Oral sedation dentistry is developed specifically for patients to manage their anxiety levels. The dental sedation medication here helps patients remain in a calm and relaxed state.

Patients undergoing complex procedures

Dental treatments such as root canals, dental fillings, crowns or extractions can be exhausting. Dental sedation medication allows people to sit for long hours at a stretch.

Patients with tooth sensitivity

Some people have sensitive teeth or gums that make dental procedures a painful experience. Oral sedation calms your nervous system, leading you to a relaxed state.

Patients with a strong gag reflex

A strong gag reflex can make any dental procedure feel challenging. Oral sedation works by relaxing your oral muscles, which naturally calms your body’s reflexive response.

Complete Treatment Timeline: Same Day Procedure

Oral sedation is typically completed in a single visit, depending on the dental treatment required. The sedative is taken prior to your appointment, with effects lasting a few hours. Most patients feel relaxed during the procedure and recover within the same day, though mild drowsiness may continue for a few hours. Normal activities can usually be resumed by the next day with proper care and guidance.

Preparation And Recovery Guide For Oral Sedation

Preparation And Recovery Guide For Oral Sedation

Preparing before your oral sedation ensures you get to have a comfortable experience. The aftercare instructions further ensure a smooth recovery and minimises of any risks. Here are some simple steps you can take to achieve the best results

  • Before your oral sedation appointment: Before your appointment, make sure to take your prescribed medicines as instructed by your dentist. In most cases, patients are advised not to eat for at least 68 hours before the procedure. Small sips of water, however, can be allowed. It's advised that the patients bring a responsible adult to help them travel home. Further, wearing loose and comfortable clothing can help you stay relaxed during the entire procedure.
  • After your oral sedation treatment: Due to mild drowsiness, rest and recovery become vital after a dental sedation. In the beginning, avoid any heavy meals and focus on eating light. Other dietary adjustments could also be recommended by your dentist. It's essential to understand that mild dizziness and grogginess are actually quite normal. Unusual symptoms like difficulty breathing, prolonged drowsiness, fainting, or vomiting, however, demand prompt medical attention.
