Root Form Dental Implants

Root form dental implants are the most popular and affordable dental implants throughout the world. Although they were not the first to be used in North America, the root form dental implants now compose the majority of all dental implant treatments. These types of dental implants are made to resemble the root of a tooth and come in a cylinder shape dental implant, a straight screw shape dental implant or a conical screw shape dental implant.

Root Form Dental Implants

This dental implant refers to the root area only. There are 2 basic ways a tooth is attached to the implant in a single tooth type of situation.

Cemented

A “cemented” method would be where a middle structure is screwed onto the implant with an even smaller screw. The tooth crown or cap is then cemented on the tooth in the same way a normal crown is cemented on a natural tooth. This is the best way to place a tooth on an implant in a single tooth type situation. The advantage is that the crown rarely loosens. The disadvantage is that the cost of the restoration may be more and that if it does loosen then it is more difficult to tighten.

Screw Retained

The second method of securing the crown to the tooth is the “screw retained” method. In this option, the crown is screwed directly to the implant through the crown itself. The access hole is then filled with a filling. The advantage of this type of method is the fact that the crown can be easily removed if needed to be repaired. The disadvantage is that this small screw is put under a lot more pressure than in the previous situation and the screw can become loose more often needing tightening.

Am I a candidate for a dental implant in Sunshine Coast?

A dental implant requires a good foundation. The perfect candidate for dental implants should have overall good health. In other words, there should be no signs of gum disease or decay. An oral and medical assessment will be conducted before beginning the treatment.

However, a small proportion of patients may not be able to receive dental implants. Here are some reasons why patients may not be eligible for an implant:

  1. Bone Volume loss: If a patient has suffered substantial bone volume loss either due to a long-term absence of natural teeth or due to a disease. There may not be enough bone to support an implant.
  2. Current Medication: Before taking any medication, you should understand the risks and potential side effects it could have on the surgery. It is recommended to consult with a surgeon about the dental implant procedure and other details before undergoing the surgery.
  3. Periodontal disease/gum disease: Periodontal disease is one of the main reasons for tooth loss in adults. In case you have periodontal or gum disease you will have to get your gum treated before opting for a dental implant.
  4. Existing medical conditions: Diabetes, psychiatric disorders, and alcoholism may prevent some patients from being able to receive dental implants.

Dental Implant Treatment Options

Different types of full-mouth dental implants may use anywhere from 2 to 6 dental implants to support a full arch of teeth. The types of dental implants include:

  • The All-On-4 Full Dental Implants: These implants use two straight and two angled implants to support the dental crowns. The procedure is completed by attaching the replacement teeth to the implants.
  • The All-On-Six Dental Implants: These implants help provide a firmer bite and support. However, they are not suitable for patients with limited bone structure.
  • Zirconia Bridges: The Zirconia Bridges use six to eight dental implants to support replacement teeth and are considered one of the most reliable options.
  • Traditional Removable Prosthetics: The removable prosthetics can be retained by two implants or supported by 4 or more implants and are typically a less stable option.
  • Full-Implants No-Denture: This is a less common and more expensive option that requires enough gum and bone structure to support one implant per tooth. A teeth bridge with no gum stimulation is then placed on top for complete restoration.
