Keep Your Smile Aligned: The Importance of Retainers

Keep-Your-Smile-Aligned-The-Importance-of-Retainers

Orthodontists widely acknowledge the importance of retainers in maintaining orthodontic treatment results. By understanding the significance of wearing retainers as instructed by their orthodontist, you can preserve your beautiful smiles forever. Let’s find out how important it is to wear your retainers as your orthodontist recommends and how it can help you keep that gorgeous smile you worked so hard for!

Understanding Orthodontic Retainers

Orthodontic retainers, also known as teeth retainers, are special devices that help keep your teeth in their newly straightened positions after orthodontic treatment like braces. They come in different types, such as fixed ones behind your teeth or removable ones you take out.

Why are these retainers important? Well, they stop your teeth from moving back to their old positions, which can happen over time if you don’t use them.

But here’s the catch – even though many start strong, wearing their retainers as they should, about 19% of people stop wearing them between 19 and 24 months after their treatment. This could lead to their teeth moving back to their old positions, undoing the hard work of their orthodontic treatment.

Research suggests that wearing retainers for 12–22 hours daily for at least two months significantly reduces the risk of relapse. Knowing the different types, their purposes, and the importance of consistent wear can also help individuals maintain their orthodontic results effectively.

Types of Retainers

When it comes to retaining that perfect smile after orthodontic treatment, there are two major types of retainers to choose from. Let’s dive into the statistics to see what people prefer:

Fixed Retainers

Bonded retainers (BRs) or fixed orthodontic retainers are thin wires bonded behind teeth to maintain alignment. They offer convenience and are discreet. Proper oral hygiene and regular check-ups are essential for maintenance. 60.2% of orthodontists reported accidental activation of fixed retainers per year, with the ‘pretreatment situation’ being the factor most influencing retainer choice.

Removable Retainers

Thermoplastic retainers (TRs) or removable retainers are custom-made plastic devices. Options like Hawley or vacuum forming are the most common mode of fabrication for removable retainers. It allows easy removal for cleaning and activities. Compliance with wearing instructions ensures effectiveness in preventing tooth movement.

Fixed vs. Removable Retainers

Feature Fixed Retainers Removable Retainers
Type of Retention Permanent, bonded behind teeth. Removable, it can be taken out by the wearer.
Material Thin wires made of metal or tooth-coloured composite. Plastic or acrylic base with wires or clasps.
Popularity Preferred by approximately 47.0% of individuals. Chosen by around 33.9% of individuals.
Convenience Convenient, no need to remember to put them in/out. Versatile, it can be removed for eating, cleaning, and activities.
Visibility Discreet, not visible from the front of the mouth. It can be visible when worn, depending on the type.
Maintenance Requires special care to prevent plaque buildup. Easier cleaning for both retainer and teeth.
Compliance No compliance is needed once bonded in place. Compliance is needed with wearing instructions.
Effectiveness Effective in maintaining tooth alignment. Effective when worn as instructed by the orthodontist.

Why Retainers are Necessary After Braces?

Many people eagerly anticipate the day they finally get braces removed after undergoing the transformative journey of braces. However, the journey to a straight smile doesn’t end there. Let’s delve into the importance of retainers after braces:

1. Retention of Results

  • Preventing Relapse

Without retainers, there’s a risk of relapse, a condition in which teeth gradually shift back to their original positions over time. Retainers act as guardians, holding teeth in their new, straightened alignment.

  • Preserving Alignment

Retainers help preserve the alignment achieved by braces, ensuring that all the time and effort invested in orthodontic treatment doesn’t go to waste.

2. Bone Remodeling

  • Supporting Bone Structure

Braces not only move teeth but also stimulate bone remodelling, where the bone around teeth adjusts to their new positions. Retainers support this process by maintaining pressure on the teeth and surrounding bone.

  • Facilitating Bone Remodeling

By providing consistent pressure, retainers facilitate proper bone remodelling, ensuring that the teeth remain stable and well-supported within the jawbone.

3. Age-Related Changes

  • Preventing Physiological Tooth Movement

Throughout life, natural physiological forces can cause teeth to shift slightly. Retainers help counteract these forces, preventing unwanted tooth movement.

  • Minimizing the Impact of Growth

Growth can impact dental alignment for younger individuals, especially adolescents. Retainers minimize the impact of growth-related changes, preserving the results achieved by braces.

Compliance and Long-Term Maintenance

  • Consistent Wear

The effectiveness of retainers relies heavily on consistent wear. Orthodontists usually suggest wearing retainers for a certain number of hours each day, usually for at least the first few months after braces removal.

  • Lifetime Commitment

Retainers aren’t just for a few months or years; they’re a lifetime commitment. Even after the initial phase of intense wear, wearing retainers regularly, albeit less frequently, is necessary to maintain the results achieved by braces.

Pros and Cons of Orthodontic Retainers

Retainers are essential for maintaining the results of orthodontic treatment, but each type comes with its own set of advantages and disadvantages.

Factors Pros Cons
Effectiveness Prevents relapse, keeping teeth in their new positions. Requires consistent wear for long-term effectiveness.
Convenience Fixed retainers are discreet and require no daily maintenance. Removable retainers may need to be removed for eating and cleaning.
Comfort Removable retainers are more comfortable to wear. Fixed retainers may cause initial discomfort or irritation.
Hygiene Removable retainers are easier to clean as well as maintain oral hygiene. Fixed retainers can trap food particles, requiring extra care.
Durability Fixed retainers are durable and long-lasting. Removable retainers may need replacement over time.
Visibility Fixed retainers are discreet and not visible from the front of the mouth. Removable retainers may be visible when worn.
Adaptability Removable retainers allow for easy adaptation to lifestyle activities. Fixed retainers may limit certain activities and food choices.
Cost The initial cost may vary but is generally affordable. Retainer replacement or repair costs may add up over time.
