Understanding A Chipped Tooth

Understanding A Chipped Tooth

A chipped tooth is a dental condition in which a large portion of the tooth’s enamel breaks off. Several reasons, such as biting on hard food items, any accident, tooth decay, or weakened tooth structure, can be responsible for this. A visible crack, sharp pain when chewing, swelling, or gum irritation are a few ways to identify a chipped tooth. And while a chipped tooth can be classified according to minor, moderate or severe condition, all instances require the assistance of an expert.

As a trusted Sunshine Coast dentist, we offer chipped tooth repair treatments such as dental bonding, dental veneers, dental crowns, and more, based on your condition.

Steps To Take When You Notice A Chipped Tooth

Here are some steps you can take to lessen the discomfort caused by a chipped tooth:

Note the damage

See how bad the chip is, and if it cuts your tongue or cheek. Any pain, bleeding or swelling should also be checked.

Rinse with warm water

Rinse your mouth with some warm water to wash away any collected debris. If you notice minor bleeding, make use of a saltwater solution.

Avoid hard or chewy foods

You should stay away from hard food items such as ice and nuts and chewy foods such as toffee or chewing gum.

Save the broken pieces of your tooth

If you find any broken pieces of your tooth, don’t assume that you should throw them away. In some cases, this can be reattached.

Professional Treatment Options We Provide At Oris Dental

These clinically proven treatment options might be recommended by our experts for a chipped tooth:

  • Dental Bonding: In dental bonding, a tooth-coloured composite resin is selected that matches the tooth’s natural shade.
  • Dental Crowns: For a chipped tooth with significant damage, a custom-made crown might be a more suitable option.
  • Veneers: Use of veneers is not just suggested to improve your appearance but also to correct chipped teeth, uneven edges and even discolouration.
  • Root Canal Treatment: When the chipped tooth creates damage to the inner pulp, a root canal treatment might be deemed necessary.
